Volunteering for St. Rocco’s – “One of the Best Decision I’ve Made” says Sarah!

In Hospice Care Week we're finding out about all the people who contribute to our care at St. Rocco's. Here's Sarah's story.

Sarah Guile likes nothing more than having a chat with people and getting to know them. That is one of the reasons that she loves volunteering for St. Rocco’s.

“One of the best events for me at St. Rocco’s is the Starlight Ladies Walk. The last couple of years I have volunteered to look after the “Why I’m Walking’ memory wall where the ladies are invited to fill out a card and add it to all the others on the wall. It’s very moving and I find it so rewarding talking to the ladies and listening to their stories when they come up to fill out their cards.”

Sarah began her volunteer journey with St. Rocco’s after her son started school.

“It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” she says. “I started off volunteering in the shop in Birchwood and then began supporting the fundraising team at events and occasionally in the office. It fits in perfectly with the rest of my life. There such a lot of different things to do. I’m already looking forward to helping out with this year’s Christmas tree collection.”

Sarah gives up time in between Christmas and New Year to answer the dedicated phone line  and sign people up to have their real trees collected in return for a donation to the hospice. It’s a busy time and the Fundraising team are grateful for the extra support.

“The phone doesn’t stop ringing between Christmas and New Year and I really enjoy talking to people when the call. I get such a great sense of satisfaction from volunteering.  The staff at the hospice are so kind and friendly. For me volunteering is better than a paid job! I love it!”
