Starlight’s Star Volunteers

Our annual Starlight Ladies Walk could not take place without the support of an army of volunteers. They are appreciated by our walkers who say it’s the volunteers who make the night for them. We asked one volunteer why Starlight is special to her.

Carole Davies and her friend Susan are veteran volunteers of the Starlight Walk. In the first few they combined volunteering on the registration desk with taking part in the walk but now they are full-time volunteers, staying at the Orford Jubilee Hub all night to de-register the ladies as they return at the end of the walk.

So what do they think is so special about St. Rocco’s Starlight Walk, that they are willing to give up a night’s sleep to help out?

“The atmosphere is fantastic, it is great to see everyone come together and support the hospice. I get quite emotional on the night seeing everyone, explained Carole.

It is certainly a fantastic sight to see a thousand ladies set off, winding their way in a colourful column out of the Hub car park and through the streets of Warrington. There is always lots of laughter and excitement with ladies dressed in their Starlight T-shirts and this year with fantastic ‘Glow for it’ accessories.

Carole has even turned the event into a family affair as she has convinced her husband and daughter to marshal and they really enjoy the occasion as well.

When Carole’s husband was diagnosed with bowel cancer she was really touched by the care and treatment that they received here at St. Rocco’s and wanted to give something back,

“In the scheme of things giving up one night of sleep isn’t too bad, especially when you stop and think about the cause and who you are helping,” she said.

If you would like to take part in this year’s walk on Saturday 24th June, there is still time to enter at www.starlightladieswalk.co.uk.
