Volunteers Making a Difference

There’s always laughter and chat to be heard coming from our Creative Therapy room in the Vitality Centre.

Volunteer Week - Chris & Mo

Volunteers Chris and Mo enjoy working with the patients and having new and different ideas for them to try, but for them it’s the relationships that are forged around the craft table that are really important.

“I come from a background of working in adult education and crafts,” explained Chris, “So coming here after I retired seemed like an extension of that. It’s very humbling to see how patients really value the craft sessions. It’s something completely away from their illness and things such as hospital appointments. Even though they are the ones going through such a tough time, they are still saying thank you to us for running the sessions!”

Mo is passionate about crafts. She loves sharing her knowledge and helping people to get involved.

“I think the sessions offer people a safe environment and the opportunity to be themselves whilst doing something different. It’s amazing how many patients start off just coming in to watch and to chat but after a little while they’re getting stuck in with making things!”

Chris thinks even just facilitating makes a difference. “We had one patient who wanted to do watercolours. Although it’s not really something I know much about, we had the equipment here and were able to give her the opportunity. She’s become really good at painting now and has joined other art groups.”

They both thoroughly enjoy volunteering. Chris has been with St. Rocco’s for over six years and says it allows her to feel part of a working environment. Mo, who also volunteers as a receptionist every other Saturday, says she’s always telling people how volunteering for St. Rocco’s is brilliant – even the taxi driver who takes her home.

“Volunteering here does as much for me as I think it does for patients! The satisfaction I get from it – it pays back in droves to volunteer!”
