As part of our Sponsor A Nurse campaign we spoke to Kat, a staff nurse on IPU.

As many of you will know being a nurse is a non-stop job, between taking care of patients, supporting loved ones and the day-to-day running of the IPU our team are lucky of they get 5 minutes to catch their breath!

We managed to speak to one of our wonderful (but very busy) nurses, Kat, to do a quick Q+A about her time here at St. Rocco's and how our Sponsor A Nurse campaign is helping her and the team...

How long have you worked at St Rocco's?

I've been here since end of November 2020

What is your current role?

I'm a Staff Nurse on the IPU

What does your job involve?

I work on the main ward looking after patients, some needing treatment for symptoms, others needing end of life care and their families needing support as well.

What made you pursue a career in palliative care?

As a student I cared for a patient at the end of their life and saw how important this stage of life is not only for the patient but their family. I developed my passion for palliative care from there and completed a Masters at Uni centred around improving service provision around palliative oncology care.

What do you believe makes PCN so special?

It is unique and patient centred, we get to know our patients and their loved ones when they’re at a vulnerable and difficult period which I find very rewarding and humbling.

How do you get through those emotionally challenging times? What drives you to carry on?

Everyone is unique and deserves the best care as they approach the end of their life and we only have one chance to deliver the best care possible for patients and their families.

What is your most treasured or fondest memory within your career?

A fond memory is definitely when a patient blackmailed me to make cheesecake for him after finding out I made one for staff! Makes me chuckle to this day – I did bring him a piece! But every moment you spend helping patients and their families is rewarding enough 😊

And finally, what does St Rocco’s mean to you, what is it that keeps you working here?

The team is amazing and everyone is so focused on patient care and supporting their families which is the most important part of the service we deliver.
