Grace’s Fundraising Story

image

Grace Ashurst is running the Manchester Marathon on 19th April 2026, in memory of her mum Debbie after she was cared for at St. Rocco’s. Grace wanted to give something back after the hospice cared for her mum with dignity and love and the family were surrounded by a caring nursing team.

We spoke to Grace about her upcoming Marathon and why she chose to support St. Rocco’s Hospice through her fundraising.

Is this your first marathon?

No, this will be my second marathon. I ran the Manchester Marathon last year, just a few weeks after we lost Mum. I hadn’t trained and had spent months by mum’s bedside, so it was a true challenge both physically and emotionally. I was raising money for The Christie, who cared for Mum throughout her diagnosis and treatment, and that gave me the strength to get to the finish line.

This year, I’ve committed to my training and hope to achieve a personal best!

What inspired you to run for St. Rocco’s Hospice?

Hospice care was never something we imagined needing, especially not for Mum at just 48 years old. I cared for Mum, but the team at St. Rocco’s became invaluable in supporting us as her needs and pain management became increasingly complex. We were overwhelmed by how well-equipped the hospice was, not only for patients, but for families too. My 16-year-old sister and I were always made to feel welcome, and every member of staff showed such kindness and compassion.

Mum was treated with dignity, love, and respect. She always felt heard and understood. “Thank you” will never feel enough for what her care team did for our family, but fundraising is one way we can try to give something back. I know this is something Mum would wholeheartedly support, and if she could, she’d be waiting at the finish line, cheering us on.

How are you feeling ahead of the big day?

Excited! I’m really looking forward to soaking up the electric atmosphere on the day. I know it will also be incredibly emotional, as the race falls close to the first anniversary of losing Mum.

It’s staggering how much St. Rocco’s relies on fundraising and donations, which makes this challenge feel even more meaningful. We experienced first-hand how vital their support is, and it’s so important to my family and I that we do whatever we can to help the hospice continue providing care to others.
