Name: Becky Blackwell
Job Title: Clinical Lead for Outreach Services and Advanced Practitioner
What does your role involve?
My role is varied, so no two days are the same. My day-to-day duties include: reviewing patients both in the hospice and the Warrington community with complex symptoms and those receiving end-of-life care through our Palliative Virtual Ward, supporting the development of our nursing team through mentoring and line management, delivering education sessions, managing our Warrington Integrated Palliative Care Hub and Palliative Virtual Ward platforms, and working closely with local partners to develop services and build relationships to meet the needs of the patients we care for across Warrington.
Background:
I have been a nurse since 2013. I initially worked in acute medicine and then transitioned into palliative care in 2018. I have recently completed my MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice at Salford University ,and I have an additional MA in Healthcare Ethics and Law. Before my career in nursing started, I also worked as a pastoral and study skills mentor at a local college.
How many years have you worked at St. Rocco’s?
I joined St Rocco’s in 2018 as a Staff Nurse and then progressed to a Senior Nurse, where I worked nights. To allow me to complete my training in advanced practice, I moved onto the day shift with our medical team in a Trainee Advanced Practitioner role. After completing the course, I transitioned into my current role.
What made you want to work at St. Rocco’s?
I have a personal connection with the hospice as my dad passed away here during summer 2012. The care both he and my family received was so warm, welcoming, and supportive, so when I decided that I wanted to pursue a career in palliative care, it led me to apply to St. Rocco’s.
