Izzi has recently completed her second placement at St Rocco’s Hospice. She is studying for a qualification in Health and Social Care at Priestly College. We caught up with Izzi to chat about her time at St Rocco’s and aspirations for the future.
Can you tell us more about your course?
I am studying for a T-Level which is the equivalent to 3 A-Levels and focuses on vocational skills so I get to do different placements to learn more about healthcare whilst I also spend time in the classroom.
What have you learnt so far during your placement at St Rocco’s?
Towards the end of last year, I spent one week on the inpatient unit and one week based in the Vitality Centre. I am lucky because I also got to complete a second placement at St Rocco’s in March, and this has included working with the McMillian team.
It has been such a great experience, and I have been encouraged to get involved in lots of aspects of care in the hospice. I have attended the relaxation group, and it was nice meeting patients and carers and being able to help them. I also had the opportunity to attend a training session for clinical staff about how to diagnose certain conditions and spot the signs; it made me more passionate about my career choice.
Since starting my course, I have grown in confidence and my social skills have improved. All the staff at St Rocco’s have been lovely and so supportive and encouraging.
What are you hoping to do after you finish your course?
When I have completed my T-Level qualification, I want to apply to university and train to become a nurse.
Thank you, Izzi, for your enthusiasm and dedication during your placements at St Rocco’s! We are sure you will achieve your dream and make an excellent nurse in the future.
