On 14 April 2024, Ellie Redmond and a group of her colleagues from Mitie & Co-op challenged themselves to complete a hike in the Peak District to raise money for St Rocco’s and Warrington Hospital ICU.
The determined team walked up Mam Tor together where they got to appreciate the views looking over Hope Valley below.
On 4 October 2020 Ellie’s mum, Lisa, sadly passed away following a long battle with breast cancer. Ellie wanted to express her gratitude to St Rocco’s who cared for her mum in her final month and said that the staff bought a light and warmth to them all in such difficult circumstances.
Ellie spoke of her mum and said that their family will forever be defined by her strength and kindness.
‘Through her breast cancer illness, she continued to be kind, loving and positive. At each and every hurdle, my mum showed a level of bravery and resilience that my dad, brother and I will admire forever.
Her positive outlook with a no excuses attitude to overcoming challenges and looking forward with kindness and love, is etched into the hearts of everyone she met.
My Mum’s life motto is captured on a coaster she used to keep at the side of her bed with her daily routine and I hope it inspires others to be as amazing as she was!’
The team of hikers were supported by their employer, Mitie & Co-op as part of their Social Values Project where they encouraged people to leave the office for the day and get together with colleagues, friends, and family to help raise money for two valuable causes.
Along with donating money to St Rocco’s, the team also supported Warrington Hospital ICU in memory of Erin, daughter of John McSherry, Head of Operations. Erin passed away in the winter of 2022 and was cared for by Warrington ICU.
‘Erin’s beauty inside and out and caring, loving personality shone through in everything she did and especially in her infectious smile.’
Ellie and her team also said that they were also walking to remember all of those touched by the hard-working teams at ICUs and hospices across the country.
‘Many of our teams have been touched in some way by the dedicated teams working at ICUs and hospices across the UK, and although we cannot recognise them all at once, the purpose of this walk is to thank these organisations for their selfless hard work, dedication and compassion at the hardest times of people’s lives.’
Ellie recently visited St Rocco’s with her dad and brother to receive a certificate of thanks for her hard work in fundraising for the hospice. The team raised an incredible total of over £5,000 to share between the two causes close to their hearts.
We are so grateful to Ellie, the team of hikers and everyone at Mitie who supported them through their fundraising journey. This money will mean that we can carry on caring for beautiful people like Lisa and support their loved ones like Ellie.
