Two years ago, Liam lost his Uncle Red, who spent his final days in the compassionate care of at St. Rocco’s Hospice. Red and Liam shared a love of cycling. Today, Liam rides his bike as a reminder of his determination and adventurous spirit. With that same passion for a challenge and Liam’s dedication to caring for others as a doctor, he decided to mark Uncle Red’s anniversary by climbing Kilimanjaro in February.
During Red’s time at St. Rocco’s, the family was deeply touched by the extraordinary support they received, particularly through the Virtual Ward. Dr. Esraa Sulaivany and her team went above and beyond to provide outstanding care, ensuring every need was met with compassion and dedication.
On his climb, Liam was part of a team, which included doctors from America and Switzerland who were fascinated by our healthcare system as palliative care had to be paid for ‘on insurance’ in their countries.
"I had the St. Rocco's top on all 6 days of climbing - and there were some inquisitive Swiss and Canadian climbers even at the Summit all the way up at 5895m - I should have attempted World's Highest charity donation - though of course no mobile signal throughout!"
The mountain stands at 5,895 metres which Liam described as a “tough and emotional journey,” but nothing compared to the challenges faced every day in Hospice care.
“Without a doubt one of the hardest, but most rewarding things I have done, and even better to provide some small support to such a great cause.”
Thank you to Liam for supporting St. Rocco’s and raising an incredible £2,105 towards patient care at the Hospice.
Liam’s Auntie, Ann, who volunteers at the Hospice, describes it as a place full of warmth, happiness, and care- not just for patients but for staff and families.
