Volunteer FAQs

Volunteering with us is flexible and to suite you and can be dependent on which area of the hospice you’re volunteering with, whether it’s a day a month or a few hours a week at the hospice or in one of our shops or at one of our events, every minute counts. We rely on our volunteers to be committed to helping us deliver a high level of service so must be reliable.

The minimum age for volunteering with us is 17 for our in patient unit but for shops and events volunteers can start from the age of 16. We also accept Duke of Edinburgh volunteers in our shops depending on availability.

Every volunteer will have an induction and receive training tailored to the role they are supporting in, we will ensure you are trained and feel comfortable before you start volunteering and each role will be supported by a Manager.

You can volunteer while receiving benefits as long as you continue to meet all of the conditions of your benefit. You are advised to make the office that pays your benefits aware of any volunteering that you are planning to do before you start.

If you are currently looking for paid work, you may agree with Jobcentre Plus to do some volunteering as part of your activities to prepare for work.

If you receive Universal Credit, volunteering can count for up to half of the time you have agreed to spend looking for and preparing for work. For more information about this visit www.gov.uk.

Volunteers donate their time for free, however you are entitled to claim for your travel and any other reasonable expenses by completing an expenses claim form.

Retail – if you apply for one of our retail volunteering opportunities then this will be passed directly to the manager of your chosen shop who will contact you to arrange an informal chat and if you would like to go ahead a induction date will be arranged.

Hospice - we will contact you again as soon as we have received your references to arrange an introductory visit and very informal interview to chat about your selected role, or any other roles within the Hospice. Please note that for some roles there may be a waiting list.  We will then carry out the relevant pre-volunteering checks which are:

• Copy and check identification documents
• Enhanced or standard DBS check, dependant on role

Once we have successfully completed the pre-volunteering checks, role specific training will be arranged, followed by a start date.
