St Rocco’s Dragon Boat Race

On Sunday 28th July over 270 courageous people met at Warrington Rowing Club ready to race Dragon Boats along the River Mersey.  As well as being a fantastic team building event, the 16 groups helped to raise over £27,000 towards patient care at St Rocco’s.

Hundreds of spectators watched in anticipation as each team took part in 3 races, competing for a place in the final.  In one of the closest races to date, the Biking Rowers were crowned champions, finishing the 250-metre race in 59 seconds.  Second place was awarded to Cadent Dragons 1 with third place going to Halliwell Jones.

The runner up teams taking part this year were: STFC Racers (Science and Technology Facilities Council), Ameritz Music, Cadent Dragons 2, LMS, The Lymm Dragons (Lymm Ladies Circle & Lymm Round Table), Equanauts (Equans), GXO Dragons, Torus Titans, Oar We There Yet (In Depth Managed Services & Bunzel), Amanda’s Maurauders, The PadGREAT All Stars and Enter the Dragons.

“Like many people in Warrington we all have our own stories of people we have lost at St. Rocco’s. We aren’t a corporate team, we are a group of friends who have threatened to take part for a while, and this year we did it! We are racing in memory of Mike Morris, Phil Sutcliffe, Laurence Kinney, Mike Jones and Sheena Hartman. We want to raise money and have fun!” PadGREAT All Stars.

St Rocco’s would like to thank Warrington Rowing Club, ARC training for providing first aid, Brian Tuohey and Moore Camera Club, the food and drink vendors – Barista Ze, Out to Lunch and Matt’s Ices and to all of our volunteers who gave up their time to attend.

A huge thank you also goes out to everyone who came to watch and show support and, of course to all the rowers and drummers.  Charlotte, Senior Events Manager said, ‘St Rocco’s Hospice relies on the generosity of the Warrington community for most of its funding. The money raised from this event will go straight to caring for patients and their loved ones. Thank you to everyone that took part and our incredible volunteers who we couldn’t run these events without.’
